Will We Ever Have An Equal Society?

We will only have an equal society when we are all equal identical beings.

When the entire human race is cloned with only one sex and identical genes we can have an equal society.

Hopefully that means never, because this is not a good idea. There are benefits to diversity.

But if human beings are very different in their abilities, wants, desires, goals, hopes, dreams, needs, and efforts, how can we have an equal society?

The easiest way to achieve equality is to beat and cut everyone down to the level of the lowest. That’s happened in some communist countries, most notably Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge. It wasn’t good for anyone.

Otherwise, some people need more eduction, some need particular medical treatments, some need life long assistance, some are productive, some are lazy, some are selfish, some are ambitious, some are cruel, some are artistic, some are scientific, some are …

Which means one is constantly making value assessments and trade offs. Is it fair that a talented teacher doesn’t get to make much money because there are a lot of other less talented willing teachers, but someone who is a talented at business (like Jeff Bezos) makes a lot of money precisely because other willing business people are less talented? Should we stop this?

Is it fair that mothers don’t get paid for doing the most valuable work in society?

Is it fair that women can have babies but men can’t?

Should we stop this?

Justice may not be achievable, but it is worth striving to improve the justice of the world and reduce injustice.

Fairness is important.

But the difference between being identical and being equal is poorly understood.

And equality is a complex, tricky, and over-rated idea.

See if you can even find 100 people who all agree on what ‘equality’ in a society even means.

Hope these thoughts help.
